This is what you do: Click the "INSERT" on the upper left hand part of the MT4 window then select "INDICATORS" then select "TREND". From the menu there click "MOVING AVERAGE". All you have to do is select "SIMPLE" in the MA method if you want SMA. If you want EMA, just select "EXPONENTIAL" in MA method. Set the parameters you want and then just click okay. You're all set!

There are EMA and SMA on your MT4 platform. I have been using various MT4 from different brokers and all of the have standard indicators including EMA and SMA.
Go to Insert > Indicators > Trend > Moving Averages. On the Parameters tab, you can choose how is MA plotted. You can select Simple, Linear, Exponential and Smoothing depending your preferences.
If you cant find it, probably reinstalling or changing different MT4 broker may fix the problem. Haven't find such problem though.
